Panasonic Err 14.0 alarm: overcurrent protection

Panasonic MINAS Err 14.0 is an overcurrent protection alarm. The current in the drive output was too high. The usual causes are a motor or cable short, a failed drive power stage, or a wrong motor connection.

By Suresh Sankaran, founder of Star Automations, servo motor repair since 1998.

01Meaning

What the alarm means

The drive detected output current above the protection limit and stopped. Alarm numbers differ between MINAS series, so confirm with the manual for your drive.

02Causes

Common causes

  • Short between motor phases or to earth in the motor or cable
  • Failed power stage in the drive
  • Wrong motor wiring or wrong motor setting
  • Winding fault in the motor
03First checks

Safe first checks

General guidance only. Follow the drive manual and your site's electrical safety rules. Power off, and let the DC bus discharge, before touching connectors.

  1. Power off, let the DC bus discharge, and disconnect the motor from the drive.
  2. Power on without the motor: if the alarm stays, the drive is the likely cause.
  3. If the alarm clears, check the motor cable and motor insulation.
  4. Check the motor wiring and the settings for that motor type.
04Repair

When to send it for repair

Send the drive when the alarm stays with the motor disconnected. Send the motor when it clears without the motor and the motor or cable test poorly. We test both when you are not sure.

05FAQ

Questions

Can I reset Err 14.0 and try again?

Repeated tries into a short can damage the power stage further. Disconnect the motor and check first.

Is it the motor or the drive?

The disconnect test above separates them. We also test both on the bench.

How long does repair take?

Emergency repair is done the same day where the fault and parts allow, urgent in 3 working days and standard in 7 working days, counted from when the unit reaches our bench and the quote is approved. Every unit returns with a printed test report.

Can I get an exchange unit?

If we hold a matching unit, Servo Swap ships a tested exchange unit while yours is repaired. Mark "line down" on the request form and add the part number.
