Multi-turn and single-turn versions are not interchangeable without changing the drive configuration. Absolute-encoder motors also need the encoder aligned to the rotor after any encoder or rotor work.

05Shaft, connector, brake

The last four characters decide whether a motor fits

Two MPL motors with the same frame and winding can still be different parts. The end of the catalogue number decides whether the motor fits the coupling, the cables and the axis.

Keyed or keyless shaft

J is a keyed shaft for a keyed coupling or pulley. K is a smooth shaft for a clamping coupling. They are not interchangeable without changing the coupling.

SpeedTEC or bayonet connector

Connector code 7 is SpeedTEC; code 2 is the older bayonet type. The cables are different, so moving from one to the other means changing cables too.

Brake or no brake

Code 4 is a 24 V DC holding brake, used on vertical or loaded axes. Code 2 has no brake. Never replace a brake motor with a non-brake motor on a vertical axis.

Voltage class

A is 230 V class and B is 460 V class. The drive must match.

06Drives and cables

Drives and cables used with MPL motors

Rockwell's compatibility tables list MPL motors with Kinetix 300, 350, 2000, 5100, 5300, 5500, 5700, 6000, 6200 and 6500 drives. Older machines often run them on Ultra3000 drives. Kinetix VPL motors are based on MPL technology but use single-cable digital feedback, so they need a different cable and drive setup.

  • SpeedTEC power cables: 2090-CPBM7DF and 2090-CPWM7DF series
  • SpeedTEC feedback cables: 2090-CFBM7DF and 2090-CFBM7DD series
  • Bayonet-connector motors use the older bayonet cable series
  • Continuous-flex versions for cable chains

09Questions

Allen-Bradley MPL questions

More on the FAQ page.

How do I read an Allen-Bradley MPL catalogue number?

Left to right: MPL series, voltage letter (A 230 V, B 460 V), frame size, magnet stack length, rated speed letter, feedback letter, shaft letter (J keyed, K keyless), connector digit (7 SpeedTEC, 2 bayonet), brake digit (2 none, 4 24 V DC brake) and factory options (AA).

What is the difference between MPL-B430P-MK74AA and MPL-B430P-MK72AA?

The brake. The 4 in MK74AA is a 24 V DC holding brake; the 2 in MK72AA means no brake.

What is the difference between MK and MJ in an MPL part number?

M is the feedback (multi-turn absolute). The next letter is the shaft: J is a keyed shaft and K is a keyless shaft.

Can a SpeedTEC MPL motor replace a bayonet-connector MPL motor?

Mechanically and electrically it can be equivalent, but the cables are different. SpeedTEC cables do not fit bayonet connectors, so the cables must be changed with the motor.

Is the Allen-Bradley MPL motor discontinued?

Rockwell still lists the MPL family, but some older variants, such as bayonet-connector and incremental-feedback versions, have been discontinued and replaced. Check the exact catalogue number.

Do you repair MPL servo motors?

Yes. Bearings, brakes, encoders and connectors, with encoder alignment and a load test. Warranty terms are stated on each quotation.
