Control Techniques servo motor repair

Star Automations repairs Control Techniques servo motors. The motor is inspected, the failed parts are repaired or replaced, the encoder is aligned where needed, and the motor is proved on our servo motor test system with a no-load run and a load test before it leaves our bench. Send the nameplate and we confirm repairability first. Star Automations is an independent multi-brand repair company and is not an OEM service centre.

02Model number

How to read a Control Techniques Unimotor model number

Unimotor fm and hd part numbers follow a fixed pattern. A nameplate such as 095U3B300BAFCA100190 reads as follows.

PositionMeaningExample (095U3B300BAFCA100190)
Frame sizeThree digits, 075 to 250095
Supply codeE for 220 V class, U for 400 V class (hd uses ED and UD)U
Magnet type (fm)3 standard, 6 high peak torque3
Stator lengthLetter A to H, by frameB
Rated speed and brakeTwo digits give the speed in hundreds of rpm; the next digit is 0 no brake, 5 fibre parking brake, 6 resin parking brake30 and 0: 3,000 rpm, no brake
ConnectionLetter for the power and signal connector typeB
Shaft, feedback, inertiaShaft code, two-letter feedback code, inertia codeA, FC, A: single-turn inductive EnDat
Mounting and shaft sizePCD and shaft diameter digits100190

Older Unimotor UM nameplates read differently, for example 115UMD300: frame 115, stator length D, 3,000 rpm.

EF, FF and EG, FGEnDat functional safety and EnDat 2.2Safety-rated variants; send the nameplate.

Encoder faults show on the drive as a feedback or encoder trip. See servo encoder alarms, and check the trip list in your drive manual.

04Obsolete

Obsolete and end-of-life Control Techniques motors

The manufacturer has published an end-of-life notice for the Unimotor fm sizes 075, 095, 115 and 142: notification November 2022, last time buy January 2024 and last ship November 2024. Sizes 190 and 250 are not affected, and Unimotor hd is named as the replacement range. Older Unimotor UM motors are also out of production.

If your motor is on the obsolete list, repair is often the quickest way to keep the machine running, because a replacement can have different dimensions or connectors. Send the nameplate and we confirm repairability first.

05Failures

Common Control Techniques servo motor failures

Encoder and feedback faults

Communication alarms, lost position and signal errors. See servo encoder alarms.

Bearing noise

High-cycle axes wear bearings early; noise and heat show first.

Brake faults

Brakes that drag on release or slip when holding a load.

Cable and connector damage

Flexing in cable chains breaks feedback and power leads at the motor connector.

06Test bench

What the test bench checks

  • Insulation resistance and hi-pot
  • Winding resistance and balance
  • Encoder or resolver feedback and commutation offset
  • Brake release and holding, where fitted
  • No-load run, then load run; speed and current against the nameplate
  • Vibration and noise at rated speed

08Questions

Control Techniques servo motor questions

Is the Unimotor fm discontinued?

Sizes 075, 095, 115 and 142 are end of life, per the manufacturer notice: last time buy January 2024 and last ship November 2024. Sizes 190 and 250 are not affected. We repair both ended and current Unimotor motors.

How do I read a Unimotor model number such as 095U3B300BAFCA100190?

095 is the frame size, U the 400 V class, 3 standard magnets, B the stator length, 30 and 0 mean 3,000 rpm with no brake, B the connector, and A, FC, A give the shaft, single-turn EnDat feedback and inertia. The last digits are the mounting and shaft size. The table on this page shows each position.

Do you repair the feedback device on a Unimotor?

Yes, whether it is a resolver, an incremental encoder or an EnDat or Hiperface encoder. The encoder is tested, repaired or replaced and aligned to the rotor.

Do you repair Control Techniques servo motors?

Yes. Send the nameplate and we confirm repairability before you courier.

Do you repair Unimotor servo motors?

Yes. Send the nameplate and we confirm repairability before you courier.

Do you need a Control Techniques drive to test the motor?

No. Our servo motor test system runs the motor without the original drive, then a load rig applies load.

What should I send for a quote on a Control Techniques motor?

A photo of the nameplate, the alarm code and a note on the symptom.
