Repair or replace? Advice for servo motors, drives and boards

A failed unit has more than two outcomes. Star Automations looks at repairability, spares, downtime and what else in the system is ageing, and gives a written recommendation for each unit: repair, exchange, refurbished spare or replacement. Star Automations is an independent multi-brand repair company and is not an OEM service centre.

01Options

The four outcomes we compare

Each unit is placed against all four, not only the first and the last.

Repair

Component-level repair where the fault is findable and parts can be sourced.

Exchange unit

A tested unit sent against your failed one, where downtime is the main cost. See Servo Swap.

Refurbished or new-surplus spare

A tested spare from stock when repair is not worth it or not possible.

02Factors

What the recommendation weighs

These are the questions behind each recommendation.

  • Is the fault repairable, and are the parts available?
  • How long can the machine be down, and how long does each route take?
  • Is the model discontinued, and what does a spare cost in the market?
  • Has the unit failed before, and is something else causing it?
  • What else on the same machine is of the same age and make?
  • Do the new unit and the old one fit without rework?
03Output

What you get

One recommendation per unit, with the reason.

  • The recommended route for each unit, with the next-ranked option
  • Repairability findings where a unit was examined
  • Spare and lead-time position for the model
  • Units that should be handled together, such as a drive and motor pair
04Process

How the advice is prepared

You decide. The document gives you what you need to decide.

  1. Send the units

Make, model, fault and a photo, for one unit or a list.

  2. Repairability check

Units are checked at the bench where they are available.

  3. Spare position

Availability and lead time are looked up for each model.

  4. Recommendation

Repair, exchange, spare or replace, with the reasoning.

  5. Review call

We go through the list and agree the order of work.

05Questions

Repair-or-replace questions

More on the FAQ page.

Will you always recommend repair?

No. If the model is unsupported, the fault keeps coming back or a spare is the faster route, the recommendation says so.

Does this cost the same as a repair?

Send the list and we confirm the scope and the terms in the quote.

Can you also do the work you recommend?

Yes. Repair, exchange units, spares and retrofit are all available, and you are free to take the advice elsewhere.

Is Star Automations an OEM service centre?
