Common problems and why they happen
Motor stopped working after a bearing change
When a bearing is replaced, the rotor and encoder are separated and the encoder loses its position reference to the rotor. The motor then shows an encoder or commutation error, runs rough or will not enable. It needs encoder alignment and reprogramming, not a new motor.
Encoder fault or no feedback alarm
The drive cannot read the encoder: damaged cable or connector, a failed encoder, or an encoder that is not programmed for this motor. Send the alarm text and the encoder label.
Motor jerks, runs in the wrong direction or trips on overspeed
Often a wrong or lost position offset after the encoder was removed or replaced. Alignment and reprogramming correct it.
Replacement encoder fitted but the drive still rejects it
A new or used encoder must be programmed for the motor and drive. Fitting alone is not enough.
Advice before you send it
- Do not turn or force the encoder shaft or housing.
- Mark or photograph the encoder position before any bearing or rotor work.
- Keep the connector and cable undamaged and photograph the label and motor nameplate.
- Do not keep trying to enable the drive with an encoder alarm active.
- Send the encoder with the motor if the motor has been opened, so alignment is done on the pair.

How it works
- Send the encoder label. Photo of the Heidenhain label (for example EQI 1331) and, if you have it, the motor nameplate and drive make.
- Repairability check and quote. We tell you whether to reprogram, refurbish or exchange, and quote before any work.
- Reprogram, align and test. The encoder is programmed and aligned for the motor, then tested.

Heidenhain encoder questions
My motor stopped working after the bearing was replaced. Why?
