BLDC vs PMSM motor: what is the difference?

BLDC and PMSM motors are both permanent-magnet synchronous machines. A BLDC motor is usually driven with six-step commutation from Hall sensors, while a PMSM is usually driven with sinusoidal or field-oriented control from an encoder or resolver. Star Automations is an independent multi-brand repair company and is not an OEM service centre.

Short answer

The two are close relatives. The practical difference is the drive method and the feedback sensor, which decide what has to be tested and replaced when something fails.

What it means for repair

  • BLDC faults often sit in the Hall sensors, phase cables or controller power stage.
  • PMSM faults often sit in the encoder or resolver, which must be matched to the motor.
  • Either type can have bearing, winding or insulation faults.

Questions

Is a BLDC motor the same as a PMSM?

They are closely related. The names are often used loosely; the difference is mainly the drive method and feedback.

Can a BLDC motor run on a PMSM drive?

Only if the drive supports the motor and its feedback type. Check before connecting.

Is Star Automations an OEM service centre?

Star Automations is an independent multi-brand repair company and is not an OEM service centre.

How fast can a repair be done?

Emergency same-day, urgent 3 working days and standard 7 working days are available where the fault and parts allow. The timeline is stated on the quote.
