SICK Stegmann Hiperface encoder repair: SKS36, SKM36, SRS, SRM, SCS, SNS

SICK Stegmann Hiperface encoders are used on Allen-Bradley, Rexroth, Schneider, Elau, Fagor, Baumüller, SEW, Lenze and other servo motors, and most of them hold the motor's data in memory. We test the sine and cosine signals and the Hiperface data link, repair or replace the encoder, and program the motor data back.

Repair turnaround you can plan around

Send a photo of the nameplate first. We confirm whether the motor is repairable, and the quote, the same working day.

Emergency: same day

For a line-down motor, where the fault and parts allow. WhatsApp us before you send it so the bench is kept free.

Urgent: 3 working days

Repair, encoder alignment and test, counted from the day the motor reaches the bench and the quote is approved.

Standard: 7 working days

Full repair, encoder alignment, run test under load and a printed test report.

  • Free repairability check from a nameplate photo
  • Printed test report with every motor
  • Written warranty, terms stated on every quotation
  • Pickup can be arranged; parts that must be imported are quoted with their own timeline

Hiperface encoders run on about 7 to 12 V, not 5 V. Powering one from a 5 V tester or the wrong cable can give a false fault.

02Faults

How these encoders usually fail

  • Hiperface data link lost, so the drive cannot read position or motor data
  • Sine and cosine amplitude low or distorted from a failing LED or sensor
  • Memory blank or corrupted after a voltage spike
  • Multi-turn gear stage worn on SKM, SRM and SCM types
  • Cracked connector or damaged flex cable inside the motor
  • Commutation offset wrong after the encoder was moved

Reading the label

SK, SR, SC and SN are the families; S as the third letter means single-turn and M means multi-turn, so SKS36 is single-turn and SKM36 is multi-turn. The number is the housing size. Allen-Bradley motors often carry an AB part number on the motor, while the Stegmann type is on the encoder label under the cover.

06FAQ

Questions

My Allen-Bradley MPL motor shows a feedback or motor ID fault. Is the encoder dead?

Not necessarily. The Hiperface memory may be corrupted or the cable may be damaged. We read the memory first; if the data is lost but the encoder works, we program it back.

Can you replace an SRM60 on a 1326AB motor?

Yes. The replacement is fitted, aligned, and programmed with the Allen-Bradley motor data so the Kinetix or Ultra drive accepts it.

Why are Hiperface encoders sensitive to the power supply?

They need a higher supply than 5 V encoders. A wrong supply gives weak signals or no communication, which looks like a fault.

07Enquiry

Send the nameplate or encoder label

A clear photo of the motor nameplate and, if the cover is off, the encoder label is enough to start. We reply with whether it can be repaired and a quote.
