Servo encoder memory read and programming

Many servo motors keep their own data inside the encoder: motor type, serial number, pole count and the commutation offset. If that memory is lost, or a new encoder is fitted, the drive will not run the motor. We read and save the memory before work starts, check its checksums, and write the correct motor data to a replacement encoder.

Repair turnaround you can plan around

Send a photo of the nameplate first. We confirm whether the motor is repairable, and the quote, the same working day.

Emergency: same day

For a line-down motor, where the fault and parts allow. WhatsApp us before you send it so the bench is kept free.

Urgent: 3 working days

Repair, encoder alignment and test, counted from the day the motor reaches the bench and the quote is approved.

Standard: 7 working days

Full repair, encoder alignment, run test under load and a printed test report.

  • Free repairability check from a nameplate photo
  • Printed test report with every motor
  • Written warranty, terms stated on every quotation
  • Pickup can be arranged; parts that must be imported are quoted with their own timeline
01Why it matters

When memory programming is needed

  • A new or replacement encoder is fitted to a motor that stores its data in the encoder
  • The drive shows a motor identification, checksum or encoder data alarm
  • The memory was corrupted by a voltage spike, a wrong cable or a failed repair elsewhere
  • A motor was rebuilt and its commutation offset has changed

03Method

How we read and program

  1. Save

Read and store the memory file.

  2. Verify

    Check each block and checksum.

  3. Measure

Lock the rotor, find the true offset.

  4. Write

    Program motor data and offset.

  5. Prove

    Memory test, then run test.

04Report

What the report shows

  • Memory blocks read, with checksum results for each
  • Pole pairs and commutation offset stored in the encoder
  • Electrical angle measured at rotor lock, at every pole pair
  • Encoder status bits after programming
  • Run test result on a universal drive
05FAQ

Questions

What happens if the encoder memory is blank?

The drive reads no motor data and usually shows a motor identification or encoder data alarm. The motor will not be enabled until the data is restored.

Can you copy the data from my old encoder?

Yes, if the old encoder still communicates. We save its memory file first. If it does not, we rebuild the data for that motor model and set the commutation offset by measurement.

Do you change the motor nameplate data?

No. The data written matches the motor's own nameplate and model, so the drive sees the same motor it was commissioned with.

Is this the same as encoder alignment?

Related. On these motors part of the alignment lives in memory as an offset. We measure the true rotor position, then write the offset, then confirm it with a run test.

Send the nameplate or encoder label

A clear photo of the motor nameplate and, if the cover is off, the encoder label is enough to start. We reply with whether it can be repaired and a quote.
