SLC 500 migration

SLC 500 to CompactLogix migration

SLC 500 systems (5/03, 5/04, 5/05) are aging Allen-Bradley platforms. Star Automations migrates them to CompactLogix 5380 or ControlLogix: audit, program conversion from RSLogix 500 to Studio 5000, 1746 I/O strategy and a planned cutover. We also supply SLC 500 spares and repair modules while you plan.

Typical migration paths

The right target depends on your I/O count, networks, performance needs and budget. We confirm the target during the audit — the table shows the usual direction, not a fixed rule.

What needs care in this migration

Back up first

Before any work, upload and save the program from the running processor, and record the firmware, I/O and communication settings.

Software and Windows

RSLogix 500 on current Windows versions can be a problem. Check the compatibility matrix for your version; many sites run it in a virtual machine.

I/O replacement

1746 I/O can be replaced module by module. We map every channel in the audit so nothing is missed.

Fault light

A solid FAULT light on an SLC processor can mean memory, battery or hardware trouble. Send us the LED pattern and we will advise.

03How we run it

Our migration process

  • Migration readiness audit: inventory of hardware, firmware, networks, programs and spares
  • Back up and document the running system before anything is touched
  • Design the target architecture and I/O mapping; agree scope and the cutover approach
  • Convert and rebuild the program and HMI, with every conversion warning reviewed by hand
  • Test in stages: simulation, panel factory test where panels are built, then site testing
  • Cutover with a rollback plan, then handover documentation

What we need from you: Program backups (or access to the running processor); Electrical drawings and the I/O list, if available; Network layout and device list; Photos of nameplates, panels and wiring; Your shutdown windows and any safety requirements.

06FAQ

Common questions

Is the SLC 500 still supported?
Check Rockwell lifecycle status for your processor model. In practice many are still running, and spares come from surplus and repair. We source them for you.
How do I back up a SLC 500 program?
Go online with RSLogix 500, upload the program, and save the project. Also record the processor firmware and communication settings. If you cannot connect, send us what you see.
Do I need to replace 1746 I/O?
Not immediately. Plan to move to current I/O during the migration; we map every channel in the audit.
What does an SLC fault light mean?
It depends on the processor and the LED pattern. Common causes are a dead battery, a memory fault or a hardware fault. Send us the model and a photo.

Planning this migration?

Send what you have — model numbers, a photo of the panel, or just the problem. We reply the same day with next steps. Chennai, Puducherry, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and pan-India.
