Network migration
ControlNet and DeviceNet to EtherNet/IP migration
Star Automations migrates ControlNet and DeviceNet networks to EtherNet/IP: network design, device replacement or linking devices, configuration, testing and staged cutover.

Typical migration paths
The right target depends on your I/O count, networks, performance needs and budget. We confirm the target during the audit — the table shows the usual direction, not a fixed rule.
| Legacy | Typical target | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| ControlNet | EtherNet/IP | New modules and network design |
| DeviceNet devices | EtherNet/IP devices, or a linking device | Keep devices where it makes sense |
What needs care in this migration
Keep or replace
Where devices work well, a linking device can keep them on DeviceNet while the backbone moves to EtherNet/IP.
Network design
Addressing, switches and segmentation are designed before changes.
Testing
Each device and connection is tested before cutover.
Our migration process
- Migration readiness audit: inventory of hardware, firmware, networks, programs and spares
- Back up and document the running system before anything is touched
- Design the target architecture and I/O mapping; agree scope and the cutover approach
- Convert and rebuild the program and HMI, with every conversion warning reviewed by hand
- Test in stages: simulation, panel factory test where panels are built, then site testing
- Cutover with a rollback plan, then handover documentation
What we need from you: Program backups (or access to the running processor); Electrical drawings and the I/O list, if available; Network layout and device list; Photos of nameplates, panels and wiring; Your shutdown windows and any safety requirements.
