Controller migration

ControlLogix 1756-L6x to 1756-L8x migration

Star Automations migrates ControlLogix 1756-L6x controllers, such as the 1756-L61, to the 1756-L8x family: project upgrade, firmware and software version planning, I/O and network compatibility checks, testing and cutover. We also supply and repair 1756 modules in the meantime.

Typical migration paths

The right target depends on your I/O count, networks, performance needs and budget. We confirm the target during the audit — the table shows the usual direction, not a fixed rule.

What needs care in this migration

Software version

The newer controllers need a newer Studio 5000 Logix Designer version. Upgrading a project across versions needs a careful review of warnings and add-on instructions.

Module compatibility

We check every 1756 module in the chassis for compatibility and firmware before the controller is swapped.

Memory card and Ethernet

The new controller has different memory and an onboard Ethernet port; network design is reviewed.

03How we run it

Our migration process

  • Migration readiness audit: inventory of hardware, firmware, networks, programs and spares
  • Back up and document the running system before anything is touched
  • Design the target architecture and I/O mapping; agree scope and the cutover approach
  • Convert and rebuild the program and HMI, with every conversion warning reviewed by hand
  • Test in stages: simulation, panel factory test where panels are built, then site testing
  • Cutover with a rollback plan, then handover documentation

What we need from you: Program backups (or access to the running processor); Electrical drawings and the I/O list, if available; Network layout and device list; Photos of nameplates, panels and wiring; Your shutdown windows and any safety requirements.

06FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between ControlLogix L6 and L8?
The 1756-L8x family is the newer generation with higher performance and different hardware and software requirements. We confirm the right model during the audit.
Is the 1756-L61 obsolete?
Rockwell lists the 1756-L6x family as legacy. Check lifecycle status for your exact model; spares are available through surplus and repair, and we can source them.
